Effort of this kind meets no resistance because it fights nothing: the earth yields to what grows the way earth expects things to grow.
The Judgment is all encouragement: supreme success, seek guidance, fear not, go toward the warmth and work. And the image gives the entire method in one clause — heap up small things. Height is an accumulation.
The Spirit of Shêng
The confidence for pushing upward is not found in the ego but in alignment: sincerely following the guidance of the Sage, we grow with the grain of the universe, and the cosmos supplies what the growth requires. The manner is the tree's — humble, adaptable, tolerant, meeting everyone with gentle goodwill, willing to ask for help, dismantling our own barriers and holding to the great-man potential in others.
Balance governs the climb: ambition tempered by patience, assertion by humility, each small step honoured as a complete thing with its own beginning, middle, and end.
The Shadow Side
Upward movement corrupts into climbing: the ranks scaled for status, others used as rungs, growth measured in altitude rather than in soundness. Watch also for the giant-leap fantasy — despising the small accumulations that are the only real mechanism of height — and for the push that never pauses: growth without consolidation, advance without renewal, the blind ascent that this hexagram's final line watches disappear into the dark.

The confidence that opens this door is not the ego's self-assurance but the trust earned by sincerity — theirs in you, and yours in the guidance you follow. Stay aware of your inner state, remain humble at exactly the moment encouragement makes humility optional, and the whole climb inherits this first line's great good fortune.

The Small Offering
With sincerity, even a small offering furthers. No blame.
Substance over polish: the means are modest, the manner perhaps rough, but the sincerity is real — and sincerity is what the height accepts. Do not let ambition hurry you past the necessary steps or spend effort on being noticed; recognition sought is progress lost. Bring the small offering honestly, keep the purpose plain, and advance without causing harm. The climb honours what is genuine at every altitude.

The Empty City
One pushes upward into an empty city.
Resistance vanishes: progress suddenly effortless, the gates open, no one contesting the advance. The line states it without praise or warning — which is itself the warning. Ease this complete can mean alignment, or it can mean nothing is testing you; either way, the danger is inner — the ego expanding into the unoccupied space, vigilance dissolving into stride. Keep working on your alignment while the walls are empty. Cities this quiet are moved through, not moved into.

Offered the Mountain
The king offers him Mount Ch'i. Good fortune. No blame.
Recognition at the sacred level: the climb honoured by the highest, as the ancient kings honoured their helpers on the holy mountain. This is the fruit of the diligent inner work — success that arrives as confirmation, not conquest; a place granted, not seized. Receive it with the same devotion that earned it. What is conferred from above, in response to sincerity below, carries no blame and no expiry — the mountain given is the mountain kept.

Upward by Steps
Steadfastness brings good fortune. One pushes upward step by step.
The hexagram's method, stated as its centre: by steps. Each stage complete before the next begins; each opportunity taken when it opens, and each pause honoured when it comes — for striving to prolong or maximise the moment turns progress into resistance. Extend the same patience to others: they digest their growth at their own pace, and reserve serves them better than pushing. Height gained by steps is the only height that holds the weight of standing on it.

Pushing Upward in Darkness
Pushing upward in darkness. Only unremitting steadfastness — applied to what is right — furthers.
The ascent that forgot to look: climbing blindly on, ego and ambition at the controls, past the moments of mutual receptivity where real connection was possible, deaf now to the inner voice. Advance for advance's sake ends here, in the dark. The correction is the discipline of the whole hexagram, applied at last to the climber: disengage the ambition, retreat after advances, hold still when holding still is the progress. Inner independence is the summit — everything above it is just altitude.
