Your bonds deepen now through receptivity — influence the way the mountain holds the lake: steady, open, letting your readiness to receive others do the inviting. That openness has a real effect; it drains tension from a stiff group and draws people closer than any effort to win them over could. Watch where the influence sits: toes and calves (lines 1–2) are twitches and impulses — notice them, don't be driven by them; the thighs (line 3) chase after every stirring — refrain; the heart (line 4) is where it's decided — keep yours free of agendas, because an unquiet heart projecting its designs at people reaches only its targets, and only while it aims. Keep inviting rather than assuming; good friendships never stop being freely chosen.
Influence in Community
Friendship and community
Draw people by openness — friendship invites, it never pressures.
Read this hexagram through friends, social groups, belonging, conflict, and shared life.
Hexagram 31 in friendship and community means genuine mutual attraction — the way people are drawn to each other and into groups when it works rightly. The mechanics matter: the strong places itself below the gentle, inviting rather than pressing. This kind of connection never coerces and never performs; it makes approach easy and lets people come to you.
This is among the best signs for new connection: real attraction into a circle is present or near, and the counsel is exact. Take the strong role the way it should be taken — by placing yourself below: genuine interest in others, humility, making it easy and safe for people to respond, then leaving room for them to. No campaigns, no charm offensives, no engineered closeness — what's won by manoeuvring must be held by manoeuvring forever, and it never becomes real belonging. Keep your inner state clean between the moves you make; steadiness of character is felt across a room. Let the mutual pull do the work it genuinely wants to do.
The shadow is manufactured influence: the agitated heart projecting its agenda — working a room, name-dropping, deploying charm as strategy to be liked. Equally shadowed is being merely moved: swept along by every impulse and appearance (the calves), or chasing each social stirring (the thighs) until your dignity sits in someone else's pocket. And the tongue's version (line 6): trying to win people with talk your life doesn't back. Words alone attract no friend worth keeping.
The six lines in friendship
In the big toe
The first faint stirring of interest in a person or group — nothing visible yet. Check your inner state now, while it's only a twitch.
In the calves
Drawn along by impulse and appearances. Misfortune in following it; fortune in waiting until real sincerity is established.
In the thighs
Chasing every social stirring — running after people's approval. Refrain; the one who doesn't chase keeps the very composure that draws others.
In the heart
The decisive line: a still, agenda-free heart draws people naturally. An agitated one reaches only whom it targets. Keep it clean.
The back of the neck
Will grown firm and unreactive — no longer jerked about by who did or didn't reply. Steadiness here ends the second-guessing.
Jaws, cheeks, tongue
Influence dwindled to talk — winning words the conduct doesn't back. It moves no one; let your life do the drawing.
Am I inviting these people, or performing at them?
What is my heart projecting toward this group — stillness, or an agenda?
Where am I being swept by impulse and calling it real connection?
