Something is genuinely stuck — a rift that won't resolve, a friend gone unreachable, a group locked in the same impasse — and pushing at it only bruises everyone. Take the hexagram's route: go the southwest way, toward what can still be shared and enjoyed now, rather than the northeast cliff of forcing the frozen thing. Turn the blocked season's energy on yourself — not as self-blame (line 2 is explicit: some obstruction is nobody's fault) but as honest work: which of my judgments, expectations, and running grievances helped build this wall? And seek the great man — the wise friend, the mediator; this hexagram plainly favours getting help. Circles that use a blockage this way come out sturdier than those that never met one.
Obstruction in Community
Friendship and community
The connection is blocked — the way forward runs inward first.
Read this hexagram through friends, social groups, belonging, conflict, and shared life.
Hexagram 39 in friendship and community means the way is blocked: an obstacle between you and a friend, or between you and belonging, that can't be forced or escaped. The counsel is the third direction — inward. Obstruction here is a redirect, not a denial; its assignment is the character that will carry your friendships when the pass opens.
Everything feels walled: invitations lead nowhere, new friendships stall at the same shallow point every time, the same lonely pattern repeats. Read the wall honestly — recurring obstruction usually marks where the work is internal: the guardedness, the story you carry to every gathering, the judgment that quietly disqualifies people before they can get close. Going leads to obstruction; coming back — to yourself, to self-examination without self-flagellation — meets praise (the hexagram's refrain). This isn't retreat from people; it's assembling what real belonging will need (line 4: the pause is for gathering companions and inner strength). And note line 5's promise: steadfast decency held through the deepest blockage is exactly what draws the helpers, and the friends, toward you.
The shadow is the wrong response to walls: the battering ram — repeatedly forcing a friendship or group at the same spot until both you and the bond are damaged; the victim — casting blame outward until a rough season hardens into a lonely identity; and the deserter — abandoning connection entirely because one route closed. Watch too for judgment-as-obstruction: the running indictment of your friends, or of everyone available, is itself the biggest rock in your road. The mountain asks none of these — only the turn.
The six lines in friendship
Going meets obstruction; coming, praise
Don't wrestle the difficulty at first contact. Step back, wait for the right moment, and let the pause teach what pushing couldn't.
Obstruction upon obstruction, without fault
Sometimes standing by a friend leads straight into difficulty no one caused. Press on without self-blame — this line's mercy is its verdict.
He turns back
Advancing would spend what others rely on you for. Return — not defeated, but responsible — and be received with gladness by those the return protects.
Coming leads to union
The obstacle exceeds solo strength. Step back and gather — allies, counsel, inner steadiness. Move again only when you no longer move alone.
Friends come
In the thickest blockage, help arrives — drawn by your steadfastness. Hold the centre; the friends are already moving toward you.
Turning back for the world
You could walk away from the whole tangle — and you come back instead, bringing what the blocked season taught. That return moves the whole group.
Which direction am I pushing — and is there a southwest route in this circle I'm ignoring?
What has this wall been trying to redirect me toward in myself?
Whose help have I been too proud to ask for?
