Kou is Breakthrough's shadow and sequel — one dark line re-entered at the bottom, the inferior returning from below. Meeting others halfway, with open mind and tolerance, is right and necessary; the discipline is the halfway. You go to meet within the limits of dignity and correct conduct, and no further; when an idea or situation carries the element of seduction — when involvement would take you past those limits — the response is reserve, at once, at the door. The same law governs the inner meeting: evil observed in others rouses the ego to pay insult for insult, and the ego indulged this way develops demonic power. Undermine it by returning to humility — recalling how long your own fears and misconceptions held you, the very fears that produce the evil you now condemn.
Coming to Meet in Spirit
Spiritual path
The inferior returns, looking harmless — meet it halfway, marry nothing.
Read this hexagram through spiritual practice, meditation, dreams, signs, and inner guidance.
Hexagram 44 in spirituality means the inferior element returning from below — unexpectedly, charmingly, looking harmless. The whole art is the meeting: what you admit and entertain the moment it first presents itself. Whatever comes boldly and easily advertises its danger by exactly that ease; meet it courteously, and do not marry it.
Line 1 marks the only cheap moment to stop the inferior element — at its weakest, the lean pig that looks pitiful but grown will rage; apply the bronze brake to negative tendencies in their first stirrings, for what willpower holds today with two fingers will drag it by a rope next season. Line 2 shows containment done rightly — the fish kept in its tank, neither indulged nor violently suppressed, gentle constant pressure without the rebound force provokes, and kept private, not paraded to guests. Line 5 is the gentlest and strongest line: the melon shaded with willow leaves, tolerance and quiet protection replacing correction, your own light veiled, so that what force could never extract simply falls ripe from heaven. And line 6 permits horns out — a withdrawal so complete it reads as brusqueness — when the lower nature clamours for reasonable explanations of a path reason alone cannot walk.
Everything that goes wrong in this hexagram goes wrong at the threshold. Left open: negative thoughts given serious consideration and thereby empowered — the complaint listened to until it persuades, the temptation entertained until it decides; the more you hear them out, the more completely they convert you. And the door slammed — curtness at others' weakness, contempt, the moraliser's stone expression: the same ego, now wearing the doorkeeper's uniform. True reserve neither welcomes nor attacks: the door rests, unhurried, precisely half-open.
The six lines on the path
The brake of bronze
Stop the inferior impulse at its first stirring — firmly, today, while it is still a lean pig. All the later struggles are this line postponed.
The fish in the tank
Contain the impulse gently — neither indulged nor violently suppressed. Keep the containment private; don't parade the struggle to guests.
Walking comes hard
Temptation half-resisted rubs you raw — circling what you can neither join nor leave. Seeing the hazard clearly is itself the protection — eyes open, nothing serious goes wrong.
No fish in the tank
Harshness and disdain have emptied the tank, alienating the humbler parts of self and others. The lack is felt when you need them; correct the superior mood early.
The melon under willow leaves
Shelter what is tender rather than clutching it, your own light veiled. What force could never extract then falls ripe from heaven of itself.
Meeting with the horns
When the lower nature clamours for "reasonable" explanations reason can't provide, withdraw past politeness. They'll call it proud; bear it. No blame.
What is arriving boldly and easily — and what does the ease conceal?
Which impulse needs the bronze brake today, while it's still small?
Where am I meeting the inferior in others with disdain rather than reserve?
