Innocence in Business

Business and strategy

Build from genuine value — straight dealing is the whole strategy.

Direct answer

Hexagram 25 in business means the venture thrives on integrity: action that springs from a genuine intention to serve the customer — no gaming, no manipulation, no hidden agenda. Straight dealing carries supreme success; the venture that games its market loses the very quality that made it durable. Sincerity is the whole strategy, and alertness its companion.

An established venture

Return to the unmanipulated version of the business: pricing that is honest, marketing that tells the truth, decisions made because they serve the work rather than to spin a narrative. This hexagram often arrives when a venture has grown tactical — every move calculated for optics, value engineered out to hit a number. Drop the apparatus and do the work for the work (line 2 — plough without obsessing over the quarter's harvest); paradoxically, that is the state in which undertakings actually succeed. It also speaks to undeserved setbacks (line 3): sometimes a downturn or a lost account has nothing to do with your conduct — the tethered cow taken by a passer-by. Meet unearned misfortune with composure, not a witch-hunt; not everything that hits the venture was caused by it.

Starting or launching

Your first, uncalculated read of a market or a partner is more reliable this season than any elaborate model — trust the original impulse (line 1) before second-guessing dresses it up. Build the genuinely useful thing rather than the cleverly positioned one; the venture meant to grow will do so precisely because you weren't leveraging or overselling it. Hold your course when others' doubts press (line 4 — what is truly yours can't be taken unless you give it away), and stay alert, because innocence is not naivety: this hexagram knows deception exists and keeps its eyes open while keeping its motive clean. And note line 6 — even a sound venture launched against the season fails; sometimes the innocent move is to wait.

Watch out for

The shadow is counterfeit innocence: recklessness dressed as authenticity ("we just move fast"), or wilfulness — doing what the ego wanted and calling it instinct. Action is honest by its source, not its speed. Watch too for the medicine trap (line 5): over-managing a disturbance that came from outside — the frantic intervention in a problem that would pass if left alone. And guard against naivety wearing trust's clothes: ignoring real risk in a partner or deal is not innocence, it is inattention.

Reflection

Where has managing the narrative replaced simply serving the customer?

Is our conduct clean, or is a shortcut wearing the language of instinct?

What am I frantically intervening in that would resolve if left alone?
