The Power of the Great in Family

Family and home life

Real strength at home works joined to fairness, never by force.

Direct answer

Hexagram 34 in family means great power is running through the household — strong will, confidence, the energy to move things. The oracle's single condition: strength must stay married to what is right. Power joined to fairness settles a family; power that starts butting at whatever resists it entangles its horns and hangs there, going neither forward nor back.

Leading the household

The energy to move things is here — to resolve the stuck family issue, set the standard, re-order the home. Use it on the established paths (the image's counsel): momentum through fairness, honesty, and the household's own agreed ways — not steamrolling a relative, not unilateral decisions "for everyone's good." Watch the goat in yourself (line 3): head down, butting the same disagreement with a teenager or in-law, entangling further with each charge. The masterful alternative is line 4: quiet, persevering work at the resistance until the hedge simply opens — strength like a cart's axle, invisible and load-bearing, that carries the whole family precisely because it displays nothing. And when the old family battle finally dissolves, release the battle-readiness too (line 5): let the goat go easily.

Repairing tension

Where power has become force at home, the fix is restraint, not more push. Line 1 is emphatic: the urge to advance from the lowest position — the grand ultimatum, the overwhelming show of authority — brings misfortune, certainly; let the strength wait at the toes. Line 2 warns that when the way opens and a relative gives way, that is exactly when confidence discards the modesty that earned it — keep persevering as though the gates were still shut, no turn toward correcting and controlling everyone from the new vantage. Great strength in a family fails almost only by overreach; no one else is usually strong enough to defeat it. The measure of your power is the fights it declines.

Watch out for

The shadow is the goat: the supervisory parent or elder who corrects everyone, the flush of capability that discards the gentleness which built the home, the aggressive advance that mistakes momentum for mandate. If you're wedged (line 6) — pressed a family stand-off so far that neither advancing nor backing down works — the exit is the admission: honestly recognising that your force created the deadlock is itself what begins loosening it. Goats stay stuck; the wise unhook their horns and change their way.

Reflection

Where is my strength serving the family — and where is it just winning?

What hedge am I butting that patience would open?

Can my authority take a no from a family member gracefully? That's the test of it.
