The energy to move things is here — to resolve a long-stuck conflict, reinvigorate a flagging group, take the lead others have been waiting for. Use it on the established paths (the image's counsel): momentum through respect, honesty, and the group's own agreed ways — not steamrolling a decision, not settling things unilaterally "for everyone." Watch the goat in yourself (line 3): head down, butting the same disagreement, entangling deeper with each charge, insisting you're right in a group that's stopped listening. The masterful alternative is line 4: quiet, persevering work at the resistance until the barrier simply opens — power like a cart's axle, unseen and load-bearing. And when the old friction finally dissolves, drop the fight-readiness too (line 5): let the goat go easily.
The Power of the Great in Community
Friendship and community
Real social momentum — power works only joined to respect.
Read this hexagram through friends, social groups, belonging, conflict, and shared life.
Hexagram 34 in friendship and community means great power is running through the situation — strong feeling, confidence, social momentum, the doors open. The oracle's single condition: strength must stay married to what is right. Power joined to respect strengthens a circle; power that starts butting at whatever resists it entangles its horns and hangs there.
Your confidence and drive are high, and groups respond to that — the season favours bold, warm, honest moves toward the people and circles you want. Keep the boldness on the right paths: open interest and initiative, yes; pushing past a cool response, forcing your way in, treating belonging as a conquest, never — the first is power, the rest is the goat. Check the toes (line 1): if the surge wants to advance by force — the overwhelming display, the campaign to be central — the line's verdict is rare in its certainty: misfortune, definitely. Strength that can wait, listen, and take a graceful no is exactly the strength people want in their circle.
The shadow is force at the hedge: pushing where a group resists, winning arguments by sheer wattage, mistaking your momentum for a mandate over others. Great strength in social life fails almost only by overreach — nobody else is usually strong enough to stop it. If you're wedged (line 6) — pressed so far that neither advancing nor backing off works, isolated by your own insistence — the exit is the admission: recognising that force created the deadlock is itself what begins loosening it.
The six lines in friendship
Power in the toes
The urge to force your way forward from a low position. Push now and misfortune is certain — let the strength wait at the toes.
The gates open
Resistance gives way; things flow your way in the group. Keep the modesty that got you here — success is where humility usually gets discarded.
The goat and the hedge
Butting the same disagreement again and again, horns entangling deeper. The strong person simply doesn't deploy strength this way. Back out.
The hedge opens
Quiet, steady work at the friction — and it opens without a fight. Invisible, axle-like strength: this is the line to live in.
Losing the goat with ease
The combative stance has outlived its occasion. Drop the defensiveness and readiness to argue — gently, completely, no remorse.
Wedged in the hedge
Pushed so far that no direction works, cornered by your own force. Recognise honestly that pressure built this — the admission begins the release.
Where is my strength serving this circle — and where is it just winning?
What disagreement am I butting that patience would open?
Can my confidence take a no from the group gracefully? That's the test of it.
