The waters are collecting into the lake — the team, the customer base, the coalition of partners is forming around you. The first question is the centre: are people gathered around a genuine mission, or around your vanity and appetite? A lake collecting around a sinkhole disperses. Line 4 carries the unconditional verdict — great good fortune, no blame — precisely because the gatherer works for the common welfare, not private advantage. Lead that way. Line 5 addresses partial buy-in: some have joined the position, not the principle, and their loyalty is pending — don't force or campaign for their conviction, which only breeds suspicion; let consistent character ripen them over time. And the image warns: renew the weapons. Scale attracts the unforeseen — legal exposure, key-person risk, the crisis that finds a crowded, unprepared house.
Gathering Together in Business
Business and strategy
Assemble around a real centre — mass invites the unforeseen, so prepare.
Use this interpretation for business decisions, leadership, risk, and long-range strategy.
Hexagram 45 in business means assembly — gathering people, capital, and momentum around a centre. The Judgment names the requirements: a true centre above every member, real leadership worth converging on, and full commitment. And the footnote every crowd forgets — where much collects, the unforeseen collects too. Renew your weapons; a scaling organisation is a vulnerable one.
Gathering the founding team, the first investors, the early community — line 1 catches the wavering founder, drawn to the true centre but distracted by the crowd's other pulls, and the wavering itself creates the confusion. The remedy is simple: call out. Ask openly for commitment; one clear grasp of the hand restores what hesitation scattered. Line 2 shows the deeper mechanism: let yourself be drawn toward the right people rather than manufacturing connections — what must be forced was never a true gathering. Bring what you have; sincerity ennobles a small offering past any lavish pitch. Purify your own doubt first, though — doubt at the centre becomes confusion at the rim.
Gatherings fail at the centre or the edge. At the centre: a leader gathering followers around ego, doubt, or appetite, so everything collects around a hollow. At the edge: joiners drawn by the crowd's warmth rather than its purpose — hangers-on, faction inside the fellowship, insincere numbers swelling the headcount while hollowing the mission. And over all of it, the unforeseen: mass invites mischance, and the unarmed assembly is the one that gets hurt. Growth without preparation is exposure.
The six lines in business
Sincerity not carried through
Wavering at the threshold scatters the team. Call out plainly for commitment — one clear ask restores what hesitation confused.
Letting oneself be drawn
Let the right people and partners converge naturally; forced connections were never real. Sincerity beats a lavish pitch.
Gathering amid sighs
Locked out of a coalition or deal? Don't force entry. Ally with whoever near the centre will receive you, accepting the humbler position.
Gathering for the whole
Gather people around the mission, not yourself. This selflessness is the one fully protected position — great good fortune, no blame.
Position without full trust
Some joined the title, not the vision. Don't campaign for their loyalty; let steady character ripen or reveal them over time.
Lamenting at the edge
Feeling excluded and misunderstood at a venture's rim — the distress itself proves you wanted union. Reach again toward the centre.
What is the true centre my team and partners are gathered around — and is it above me, or just me?
Have I renewed the weapons — legal, financial, key-person — for the scale I'm reaching?
Am I forcing loyalty, or letting steady character earn it?
