The requirements are exact — a true centre above yourself, not merely your own preference; the collected strength that comes from character; and full commitment, since stinginess starves what gathering feeds. Only the self-gathered can gather anything.
Gathering works best by attraction, not force. Line 2 counsels yielding to the genuine pull — toward the right practices, the right people, the right centre — rather than contriving connections or forcing balance; what must be manufactured was never a true gathering. Bring what you have; sincerity ennobles the small offering past any lavish pretence. If you find yourself outside the circle, sighing at the edge (line 3), don't force the entrance — ally with whoever near the centre will receive you, and accept the humility of joining from a lower position, since true humility is the beginning of enduring change. And note line 4's unconditional verdict: the one who gathers for the whole rather than for private advantage is the only fully protected position in the hexagram — great good fortune, no blame.
