Gathering Together in Spirit

Spiritual path

Assembly around a true centre — only the self-gathered gather others.

Direct answer

Hexagram 45 in spirituality means assembly — waters collecting into the lake, people gathering around a centre: family, community, congregation. The question is the centre: a true gathering binds to something above every member, not merely to each other. Only the self-gathered can gather others; purify your own doubt first.

Your practice

Ts'ui is union's mass event — congregation, movement, community — with all the power and all the volatility of the gathered. The Judgment names the requirements: a true centre, the king approaching the temple, the collective bound to something above itself; real leadership, the great man collected within, worth converging on; and full commitment, great offerings, for stinginess starves what gathering feeds. The image adds the sober footnote every crowd forgets — where much collects, the unforeseen collects too; renew the weapons. Who may gather others? Only the self-gathered: first accumulate knowledge of the cosmic principles and the character to uphold them; purify your own doubt, since doubt at the centre becomes confusion at the rim; and renew inner discipline after every step, because collective success breeds collective carelessness. Bettering yourself, you become a point around which better things collect.

Signs and inner guidance

Line 4 carries the one unconditional verdict — great good fortune, no blame — for the gatherer who works for the common welfare, collecting people around the true centre rather than around himself; unselfishness, in assembly as everywhere, is the only fully protected position. Line 2 counsels yielding to the genuine pull rather than contriving connections — what draws mutually needs no manufacturing, and sincerity ennobles the small offering past any lavish pretence. Line 1 warns against wavering at the threshold, oscillating at the edge of what you already know is right; the remedy is disarmingly simple — call out, ask openly for the hand of the centre, and one grasp restores everything the hesitation scattered. And line 5 counsels patience where adherence is incomplete: don't force conviction, for pressure confirms suspicion; only consistent, enduring character converts it.

Watch out for

A gathering can rot from its core or fray from its border. From the middle — a leader who never did the inner work, collecting people around vanity, doubt, or appetite, so that the lake pools over a sinkhole. From the rim — members who came for the warmth of company and not the shared aim, cliques budding within the circle, numbers growing while the middle goes hollow. And hovering above all of it, the unexpected — crowds draw accidents the way height draws lightning, and it is the unprepared gathering that gets struck.

Reflection

What does the gathering I belong to actually gather around — is there a temple?

Have I purified my own doubt before trying to draw anyone?

What foreseeable friction should I arm for while it's still theoretical?
